I have a Dell PowerEdge 750 that's been quietly running our old accounting software to network users for at least 15 years. Dell Server Eating Power Supplies Hardware. Not only is it Friday, but it is also Friday the 13th! A day that has inspired a late 19th-century secret society, an early 20th-century novel, a horror film franchise, and triskaidekaphobia, a word I had to. Snap! Cybersecurity & the boardroom, Cooper, Starlink sat internet, & Sgr A* Spiceworks Originals.Plus, it kept students from sharing their accounts/passwords with others, since they'd get in trouble not only with the school but also from their parents.

That, more than anything else, curtailed that kind of traffic. If that student's account was used to visit porn, their parents were notified, along with a screenshot of what was being viewed. The filtering was based on username from when a student would log in. They had a device in there that, instead of just filtering and blocking, took screenshots of what the kids were doing when they hit certain web sites (porn, malicious, whatever). Years ago, when I worked at an outsourced IT provider, we dealt with a private K-12 school. At least you can go forward and state what you've got on place on your network. Yes, but if you don't practice due diligence then it's your neck on the block. The reality is that with cell phones that can act as wireless routers, students can bypass any blocking we do anyway. It is one of the hardest thing to keep up with.īut we block sites that dont have a parent kind of filter like veemo, dailymotion, redit, tumblr, social sites and so on. Ignoring SSL is a bad idea especially now that more and more sites are going to https. However, I've got the ability to block that stuff from our local network, and will practice due diligence in doing so, in accordance with HR's policies already in place.ĮDIT: Oh, and I block porn/adult and malicious site classifications.Īt a K-12 school, it is the law that we have to filter the internet. If they get caught, then it's an HR policy about inappropriate use of their work time, etc, etc. If someone wants to browse porn on their cell phone via 4G, I'm not going to stop them.

Not to mention the fact that it's a lot harder to get your local PC or internal network infected with some nasty via your cell phone than via your work computer which is hooked up to your internal network. After setting up filtering at the high level you can then start adding specific sites that you don't want people on (Facebook, Twitter, etc) sure some stuff might get caught by mistake with high level filters but you can simply just add them in as exceptions. You can even drill down toward blocking streaming, flash, whatever you want. To the OPs point you can block based on tops of trees (categories) most have that functionality built in. It never surprises me seeing what people look up sometimes on a company network.Heck even your cellphone company can see what you're doing on your phone/tablet on their network. Now if you're simply talking about their carrier network plan then whatever, short of not allowing people to bring their phones into work you can't really combat that but if their on your internal/guest wifi you certainly can.Īlso having strong SOPs/Policies regarding network usage is a good place to start, sure people like to break the rules but some/most wouldn't want to risk being fired. Last thing you need is someone on your guest network looking up porn or something. If you have a Guest Wifi network you should still be blocking/filtering traffic even if its in a DMZ.

In fact, the smart people already are, because they know that the company can't track their phone (unless the company provides Guest Wifi.)? Your internal Wifi can go through a proxy or filter just like anything else so they'd still get hit with web filters. Everyone has an internet connected computer in their pocket these days, so if you prevent them from using their desk computer to access stuff, they'll just get it on their phone.
